[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 1. There will be SPOILERS.]

Seeing and hearing Cinemax’s new medical drama The Knick, from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Clive Owen, one is immediately taken with not only the anachronistic nature of it, but how the series works those anachronisms in as a central feature of the series. The incongruity of it all isn’t necessarily related to what’s on the screen, but more in terms of how what is onscreen is presented and accentuated by Soderbergh’s style and, especially, the out-of-place-yet-perfectly-suited synthesized score of Cliff Martinez.

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 2. There will be SPOILERS.]

In its second episode, The Knick is less concerned with proving itself to be a period medical drama than it is in depicting how, even while many characters as well as the titular hospital stand on the precipice of great discoveries and advancements, the obstacles or barriers keeping them from succeeding and achieving their goals are, unsurprisingly, quite familiar.

As such, the scientific progression that sometimes eludes Dr. Thackery and the rest of the Knick’s team of surgeons – seen in the series’ graphic, cringe-inducing medical procedures and treatments – ...

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 3. There will be SPOILERS.]

In March of 2012, Richard Norris became something of a media sensation and an example of how far medicine and surgical techniques and procedures had come in the last century. As the victim of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound that left him without a face, Norris had been living a reclusive life, one reportedly devoid of most human interaction that was also intermittently filled with surgeries sadly reminiscent of the one performed by Dr. Thackery on his former lover Abigail Alford in episode 3 of The Knick.

As with Thackery’s attempt to fashion some kind of ...

The titular hospital of The Knick is a place driven largely by want. The patients want to be treated and they want to live. The doctors want to keep their patients alive by treating them properly.

But in that want, there is another deeper want that propels individuals like Dr. Thackery and Dr. Edwards. It is the desire not only to treat patients, but also to be better than anyone else in doing so. And in order to do that, they have ...

Near the end of the series premiere, Dr. Edwards was taken by Dr. Thackery’s surgical ingenuity after seeing him successfully repair a man’s bowels with a tool of his own design. It was a tad unorthodox, somewhat reckless, and, considering Thackery likely had more cocaine in his system than the blissfully unaware patient lying on the operating table, quite hazardous.

But it was also unprecedented. And so, despite facing immense racial prejudice and finding himself remanded to the hospital’s basement, Edwards responded, “I’m not leaving ...

This is the age of the television showrunner. Thanks to the likes of The Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and anything falling under the creative umbrella of the one-woman industry that is Shonda Rhimes, the showrunner has become a vaunted position in our media-obsessed world. He or she who runs the shows, more often than not, also controls the more writerly aspects of television production.

As evidenced by the level of storytelling on display in many series, this ...

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 7. There will be SPOILERS.]

In ‘Get the Rope,’ The Knick continues to explore its secondary thread of racism through the character of Dr. Algernon Edwards and his expanding role at the Knickerbocker Hospital following his encounter with Thackery during last week’s superlative ‘Start Calling Me Dad.’

It’s unclear exactly how much time has passed between last week’s episode and ‘Get the Rope,’ though the return of Dr. Gallinger seems to suggest at least long enough for there to have been a respectable mourning period for the loss of his child. The question, then, ...

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 8. There will be SPOILERS.]

After the harrowing events comprising most of last week’s ‘Get the Rope‘ gave way to a pair of unexpectedly intimate scenes, The Knick continues its trek into intimacy by spending more time than it has in the previous seven episodes roaming around inside the head of one Dr. John Thackery.

In a sense, ‘Working Late a Lot’ is the payoff for Clive Owen’s performance thus far. It is a chance for Owen to take Thackery’s usual bombast and irascible genius and bury it underneath the painful symptoms of withdrawal just to see what ...

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 9. There will be SPOILERS]

As mentioned by the pharmaceutical huckster played by Tom Papa, Dr. John Thackery is no longer a man who exudes “a convincing air of healthful vitality.” The war in the Philippines has left much of the U.S. without a supply of various narcotics; namely, the cocaine Thackery uses as part of his unbalanced diet. This leaves the resident surgeon of The Knick on a desperate hunt for anything to ease his symptoms of withdrawal and, as we see, it also leads to a surprising response of assistance from those able to do so.

Throughout much of the episode, Thackery is ...

[This is a review of The Knick season 1, episode 10. There will be SPOILERS.]

With ‘Crutchfield,’ The Knick wraps up an exquisitely directed, tremendously well acted first season with an episode that offers a showcase for not only it ensemble cast – especially the work of Clive Owen and André Holland – but also for the many talents of the series’ director/cinematographer/editor, Steven Soderbergh. The finale is the kind of episode a loosely plotted series like this almost needs to have. Instead of searching for an end point on which to conclude the season, ...

2015 Golden Globes nominations

Films such as 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club, and Gravity were recognized at last year’s Golden Globes ceremony before they won big at the 2014 Academy Awards. Meanwhile, on the television side, it came as no surprise when Breaking Bad and its acclaimed star, Bryan Cranston, walked away with the top prizes for the celebrated crime/drama’s final season.

There’s been plenty in the way of great film and television produced over the 12-odd months since then too, which should make it all the more interesting to see what ends up walking away with the big awards at the 72nd Annual Golden Globes Ceremony in 2015. The popular duo of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are returning for their third stint as Golden Globes ceremony hosts this year, when the show takes place exactly one month ...

SR Favorite Television Series 2014

The year of television in 2014 was filled with more entertaining hours and half hours than any human being could possibly watch. It was the year prestige television began to slowly break free from the shackles of Sunday night, to pop up any time of the week (including the less-than-coveted Friday night slot).

Of course, if you’re a cord-cutter, there was plenty of great TV available to you at your convenience – which also meant, more so than ever before, many of the best shows were being discovered on the audience’s schedule.

That meant while many terrific shows were still became appointment television, ...

Emmys Winner Should Win List

If this past year in television has proven anything, it’s that the sea of quality programming has become so vast, that trying to figure out what is worth your time can make couch surfing feel more like swimming the Atlantic. In a sense, then, the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards‘ crowning of “the best” could be seen less as a competition amongst artists, and more as a means of filtering down the average person’s viewing habits into a more manageable list.

That’s not to take anything away from the accomplishments of the nominees, as there are some deserving choices this year (what with Tatiana Maslany finally securing ...

Gritty, bloody, and often in need of a good scrubbing, The Knick is an unrivaled viewing experience. And at its core, that’s what the show really is: a viewing experience. It is the rare kind of television whose every frame is striking in some way or another. Bloody Murder - The Knick

[SPOILERS for The Knick ahead.]

“All I know is I’m not getting what I deserve,” says Lucy Elkins (Eve Hewson) on a recent episode of The Knick, which airs the seventh episode of its second season on Cinemax tonight. Elkins, a nurse at “the Knick,” is referring to her relationships with the various men in the series. Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen), the troubled protagonist of the series, recently spurned her after a torrid, cocaine-fuelled love affair in the first season while her father (Stephen Spinella), a fiery preacher from Texas, beat her up and hightailed it down south after she confessed ...

Of all that transpires in ‘This Is All We Are,’ the season 2 finale of The Knick, the most indelible moment is that edit. You know the one; it’s late in the episode and Thackery, high on cocaine and his own surgical prowess, performs a risky self-surgery in order to repair his ischemic bowels and simultaneously prove the superiority of his cocaine epidural over the more widely used and accepted ether. Clive Owen The Knick Cinemax

[This article contains SPOILERS for The Knick season 2 finale.]

Cinemax’s The Knick is a period medical drama set in early 1900s New York that takes an unflinching look at the professional and personal lives of the staff of the Knickerbocker Hospital, while deftly handling such delicate topics as racism, addiction, religion, and mental illness.

It has starred film actor Clive Owen as the complex, drug-addicted chief surgeon Dr. John Thackery, who could remain at the top of his field if not for his own personal demons and struggles. The series has managed to survive for two seasons despite its low ratings thanks ...

Clive Owen The Knick Cinemax

The Knick season 2 ended with the show’s talented but gravely flawed hero John Thackery apparently dying in the middle of performing insane intestinal surgery on himself in front of a gallery of mesmerized witnesses. One has to say “apparently” because the show actually ended with a scene that suggested Thackery could still be alive, opening the door on a possible return for Owen’s character in season 3.

About that possible return: Reports had series director Steven Soderbergh submitting an outline for a third season to Cinemax as well as a script for a return episode. Some speculated The Knick might come back in somewhat re-jiggered fashion, with ...
